The Surface Dock from Microsoft retails at $199 and can be found at a slight discount here.

plugable-UD-5900-portsThe UD-5900 comes with HDMI & DVI outputs as well as Gigabit ethernet, 2 x USB 3.0 ports front and back as well as audio.  The styling is different from the previous Plugable docks and similar to the Microsoft Surface Dock rather than the stand up vertical style of previous docks – this I prefer.  The dock comes with a DVI to VGS adapter as well as a monitor mount do you can mount the device on the back of your screen to save desk space.  The dock comes in at $119 which is still well below the Surface Dock.

ThPlugable UD-3900e Plugable UD-3900 USB 3.0 Universal Docking Station with Dual Video Outputs for Windows 10, 8.1, 7, & XP (HDMI and DVI / VGA, Gigabit Ethernet, Audio, 6 USB Ports, 20W Power Adapter) offers a cheaper alternative to the Microsoft solution by utilizing your USB 3.0 connection and DisplayLink technology.  You can drive dual displays, get additional USB 3.0 ports as well as a Gigabit Ethernet adapter for around $99, a cheaper version with a Single monitor option available for $89.99.

While not the Rolls Royce solution it certainly offers a cheaper solution for when you are desk bound and need to drive your monitors and  peripherals in the workplace.

Which solution do you use or plan to use?  Having experienced both most certainly budget-wise I would settle for the Plugable solutions BUT with cost considerations aside the Surface Dock with one simple magnetic connector makes for the tidiest solution!
